Advertising?!

Advertising is the scourge of the free-thinking tech set. And yet here I am showing ads on my site. How repulsive! I hope the following may engender some understanding from these folks.

Like it or not, advertising serves a basic and useful function in a free market: the direct (re-)introduction of stuff to people who may find value in it. That it’s often done in manipulative ways is important to note, but doesn’t invalidate its basic economic function (and that often absolves people from their own accountability of analyzing the veracity of all messaging, public or private, commercial or otherwise).

On the internet, the ad-supported business model is one of very few proven models, including subscription-supported. Ad support works particularly well for public content websites (as opposed to business service websites, like HipChat), and networking websites (where linear growth can yield exponential value due to Metcalfe’s Law). These two traits characterize Blocvox—the web project on which I hang my hopes and dreams. ;)

Thus, Blocvox will be ad-supported (at least initially), so I must learn as broadly and deeply about online advertising as possible. And a very simple way to do this is to experiment using my own blog.
